Message from President
Once underwater acoustic technologies have been developed for practical fishing tools, they have contributed to estimating fish resource abundances as scientific survey tools. Now, the mission given to scientists in fisheries acoustics is to recommend appropriate fishery production based on the evaluation of fish resources using underwater acoustic technologies for sustainable fisheries that do not impact natural resources and the ocean environment.
Recently, the number of researchers in Asia has increased, and the technologies in underwater acoustics have been highly developed in Asian countries. However, exchanging information and cooperative work on fisheries acoustics in other countries still looks like quite a few. So, we have established the Asian Fisheries Acoustics Society (AFAS) to promote further progress in science and technologies related to Fisheries Acoustics in Asian countries.
Our society has been established in 2007 in Dalian, China. We have held 17 annual meetings. Although the 2019 meeting was unfortunately canceled due to COVID-19, once a year, Asian fisheries acoustics researchers meet to discuss various fisheries issues in Asia. Recently, the meeting has become a gathering of fewer than 100 people.
The importance of fishery acoustics in Asian countries is increasing more and more. Since many issues are specific to Asian fisheries, such as small quantities with numerous species, benthic animals, freshwater fish, and aquaculture, the AFAS aims to apply acoustical technologies for those problems. Furthermore, we aim to disseminate and enlighten people about the basics of fisheries acoustics in Asian countries.
